Fedena installation on shared hosting site5. Fedena is an open source school management system.

To install new version of fedena project you will need to do the following:

1. Download and extract files of new version of fedena
2. Navigate to the rails application directory and go to /config/environment.rb – open this up and look for a line like this:
RAILS_GEM_VERSION = ’2.3.5′ unless defined? RAILS_GEM_VERSION
and comment this line out or remove it. Instead of it you will need to add the following code to that file right before "Rails::Initializer.run do |config|" line:

3. Add the following line on the top of config/boot.rb file :
require 'thread'

4. Navigate to /public under the application root and create .htaccess file with the following content:

—————replace “/home/username/rails_app_directory” with the path to the root folder of your application.

5. Setup your database details in the database.yml
Open the file database.yml in the config folder of the fedena source. Change the following details:
database: fedena – The name of the database you want to use for fedena
username: root – Mysql username for fedena
password: mypass – The password for the above mysql user

Note: Database and user should be already created by you in your control panel.

6. Set up Fedena databases
From the Fedena source directory in terminal run,
rake fedena:plugins:install_all

Installing Fedena on Windows XP

Fedena is an open source School Management System.

Download following software.

Windows Essential Software.

Windows Imaging Component
http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=32

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=25

Ruby Installer

Mysql Installer
http://downloads.mysql.com/archives/mysql-5.0/mysql-essential-5.0.90-win32.msi

Install the above packages maintaining the order.
Install bundler gem

Open the command prompty(press window + R and write cmd)
gem install bundler --remote

Copy libmysql.dll from MySQL bin directory (usually C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin) to Ruby bin directory (usually C:\Ruby\bin)

Download fedena bundle source code from link. Extract it, this is a zip file.
Go to the fedena source directory using the command cd
See if this folder contains Gem file.

Run the command inside the fedena source code
bundle install --local

Update the MYSQL database details in the config/database.yml file. (Recommendation Open this file using wordpad or notepad++)

After updating the file issue the following commands one by one
bundle exec rake db:create
bundle exec rake db:migrate

Enable SMS module by entering into your mysql database and selecting the appropriate database. Issue the following command
insert into configurations (id,config_key,config_value) values(18,"AvailableModules","SMS");

Install mongrel service. This will help in automatic start of fedena on the windows start up.
gem install mongrel_service

After installing the service create the service by issuing following command.

mongrel_rails service::install -N Fedena -c c:\fedena -p 80 -e production

Go to windows services from the Administrative tools and change the properties by right click on the Fedena service to automatic.

Restart your windows.

After restart point your browser to localhost

Now you will be able to access fedena by without issuing any command.

“The information to be provided on the website includes affiliation status, details of infrastructure, names and designations of teachers, class-wise and section-wise enrollment of students, address (both postal and email), telephone numbers, and details of members of the school managing committee, to name a few. Thus, the schools need to prepare an annual report containing all information to be uploaded on to its website,” the letter added. The details are to be collected as an annual report and uploaded on the website before September 15 each year.

A letter to affiliated schools from the joint secretary of the CBSE’s affiliation wing M V V Prasada Rao said, “It is observed that some schools do not have their own website and have not uploaded the required information on their website. All the managers and principals of schools affiliated to the board are again requested to comply with the above orders within one month without fail.”

Educational consultant K R Maalathi said schools had to be transparent. “The first point of contact with the school is very important for parents. Schools need to redefine their public relations policy,” she added. Please click to download the circular.
